Tree Project
Collaborative public sculpture - Cameron Reserve Anglesea
We are creating this sculpture with Viktor Cebergs (chainsaw/timber sculptor) and Wadawurrung, our first nations representative for our area (design collaboration and language advisor)
Title of project MURRAN GARRANG (Living Tree or Tree of Life)
We are essentially bringing life and story back through this tree with our art
Our public sculpture concept plans to respectfully celebrate Wadawurrung design that relates to our town,
Anglesea – Kuarka Dorla.
Inspired by our initial consult with Anie Skinner - Wadawurrung, we learned about the four layers of country; Warri Country (river/ocean), Ochre Country, Sky Country and Night Country
The bark has been removed in a flowing line by Viktor and Rowan to signify the Warri Country (lowest) section.
My interpreted metal river symbol “yaluk” will flow around this section with two yellow eyed mullet “kuwiyn” sculptures swimming in the river.
Anglesea was traditionally named Kuarka Dorla – the place for hunting Yellow Eyed Mullet, so this layer is very important in our shared story.
The Ochre Country has large patterned leaves “murrun” on limb 4, River Reeds “cumbangi-tark” (used for fishing poles) in a section of metalwork between two limbs and bush tucker “karrup karrup” growing up limb 2.
Waa, the Raven will be sculpted on limb 2, Wirran, the Black Cockatoo on limb 1 with limb 3 possibly lopped a little shorter to balance out the tree’s story.
